RAWALPINDI: To make The Mall signal-free from Katcheri Chowk to Motorway Chowk, Punjab government has asked the Housing and Urban Development department to start survey of the area.

A senior official of the Housing and Urban Development department told Dawn that the provincial government allocated funds for the project in different parts. He said that the signal-free corridor would not start at the same time due to inconvenience to the people.

He stated that four underpasses would be constructed, along with two flyovers. He mentioned that in the first phase, work on Katcheri Chowk would commence after completion of GPO underpass on The Mall.

He explained that the cost of the Katcheri Chowk Underpass and widening is Rs4.450 billion, with Rs160 million allocated for new fiscal year starting from July 1. The total cost of the Race Course Underpass project is Rs2.6 billion, Chairing Cross Underpass is valued at Rs1.5 billion, with Rs54 million allocated this year. The Army Graveyard Chowk Underpass costs Rs1.9 billion, with Rs68 million allocated for this year.

The cost of the Jinnah Park Flyover is Rs4.150 billion, with Rs149 million allocated. The Ammar Chowk Flyover costs Rs3.450 billion, with Rs124 million allocated. He added that consultants would be hired, and after conducting feasibility studies and preparing the PC-I, the work would commence.
